Condo living: what to do if water leaks from upstairs?

Hi,

I do not have a list of contacts for my condo village, so I’m clueless on who to contact. Water was leaking from the ceiling (there’s a unit above mine) into my bathroom. Who would I contact and report this to? Is there a standard type of coverage that should fix any water damage? What should I do?
The leak was streaming from the ceiling into the shower (lucky me). The ceiling has a bloated bubble now about the size of 3 pancakes.

Who do you pay rent to? That’s who to tell.

Well you need to find the number for the condo manager and get him/her involved. If you have renter’s insurance it would cover any damage done to your property but you should not be liable for any damage to the building itself, especially since it’s coming from upstairs. Good luck

Who do you make out your assessment check to? Contact the people who collect your assessment for your condo and tell them about the problem. If the water is from a pipe in the ceiling, the association would be responsible for all repairs. If the leak is the person upstairs fault, then they will be held responsible for repairs. Either way it must be repaired before it causes further damage.

Contact the property manager. It is the unit causing the damage who has to pay to fix the problem. That’s why you have to have insurance in case something in your unit causes damage to another one.
