This is a summary of the most critical advice that I can offer travelers to Vietnam, particularly foreigners who wish to live there, based on my experience in Ho Chi Minh City. Street drugs: Don’t risk your life by smuggling them into the country. Meeting women (for male travelers): Take it slow with the locals and avoid the prostitutes. Don’t be a desperate “marriage freak” and get yourself into a dysfunctional marriage before you understand what you’re getting into. If you carry a purse, cross it over your chest and keep in on the side farthest from the street. Electricity: Two round prongs — nothing is grounded! You should probably bring some plug adapters. Water: Drink only Aquafina. Restaurants: Cook for yourself, or eat at the Caravelle or Sheraton or possibly some other five-start hotel. Nowhere else. Condos for rent: Minimize the upfront deposit. Police visits: Every few months, expect a visit to your home, inquiring as to the individuals residing there. Bank accounts: If you need to transfer money into or out of the country, ANZ is probably the best: anz.com . Internet access Besides DSL (which should be installed before you move into a condo), there are internet shops and cafes. If you stay in a hotel, ask if they have wifi or terminals in the lobby.
